Fire Safety for Children
Their Lives Depend on You
Children are among those most at risk
of sleeping through a home smoke alarm.
Will yours wake up in time?
As a parent or grandparent you're naturally concerned about fire safety for kids. And if you are like most people, you assume that your smoke alarms will wake your children in a nighttime fire—the first step in their survival. But a controlled scientific study in 2004 showed that fewer than one in three children aged 6-10 years woke up reliably to a standard smoke alarm signal—even when the smoke alarm was directly over their bed!
Recent broadcast news programs have also demonstrated that children can sleep right through the sound of a smoke alarm. Order a Lifetone HL™ Bedside Fire Alarm and Clock today and begin enjoying the peace of mind that comes from knowing you have the best technology available to help your children wake up in a home fire emergency, when every second counts.
The Lifetone HL uses the alarm PROVEN most effective at waking children in a fire emergency
Compared to adults, children spend much more of their total sleep cycle in "deep sleep." During deep sleep the brain turns its sensitivity to external sensory input way down, sort of like locking itself in its own dark, sound-proof room. Only very special auditory stimulation—like the low-frequency "square wave" pattern of the Lifetone HL—can break through and interrupt the brain's self-isolation during deep sleep.
Parents who take home fire safety seriously often make a fatal assumption: they think they'll have time to reach their children, wake them up and get them out of the house in time. The truth: when your smoke alarms are triggered in the middle of the night (when most fatal fires occur) it may take you 20, 30 seconds or longer to wake yourself up before you even think about getting to your children. Experts say you should plan on having no more than two minutes to get out of the house. With each ticking second of the clock your sleeping children's chances of survival are slipping away.

Working smoke alarms are still an essential first step
Statistics prove that having working smoke alarms will immediately cut your risk of death from a home fire in half (1). Most American homes have at least one smoke alarm installed; the problem is whether or not they are in working order. According to the National Fire Protection Association, more than one in five home fire deaths between 2000 and 2004 occurred in a home that had smoke alarms but they did not sound (4). For everything you need to know about smoke alarms, see our resources list to the left of this page.

Test your smoke alarm's ability to wake your children
Run a test at night after you're sure they are sound asleep (and don't tell them before they go to bed that you'll be doing a test). Make sure you are nearby to see how they respond to the alarm, and to comfort and reassure them if they do wake up and are frightened. When it comes to fire safety for children, far better for you and your kids to go through a drill like this than to find out through the tragedy of a real fire.
